POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Chief Pharmacist is responsible for all pharmacy-related operations at the Fallon Tribal Health Center, including dispensing medications, supervising pharmacy staff, overseeing day-to-day operations of the pharmacy and pharmaceuticals and provide the highest quality care to Health Center patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervise and maintain operation of the Health Center’s pharmacy and ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient dispensing of medications.
  2. Ensure the purchase, storage and supply of all items is operated safely, appropriately and economically, consistent with quality standards and with reference to legal requirements, clinical appropriateness, transit, security and conditions of chemical and physical stability.
  3. Oversees and adjusts all workflow, space and systems processes as needed to meet operational requirements.
  4. Provide advice and direction as required to medical and nursing staff on the proper and economic use of drugs and alternative types of drugs and medicines including participation in schemes for the dissemination of information in relation to drugs and drug usage.
  5. Participates in staff meetings, planning meetings and other meetings as needed.
  6. Work with providers and other healthcare staff to implement good clinical pharmacy practice to ensure safe and efficient use of medicines; including documentation of the effect of clinical pharmacy services.
  7. Provides regular consultation for patients regarding medication and assures that all other dispensing pharmacists provide regular consultation for patients as needed.
  8. Actively participates as a member of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
  9. Assists in oversight of Controlled Substance Management Policy aspect to ensure patient/provider compliance and adherence to applicable laws and regulations regarding controlled substances.
  10. Oversees the work of all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians including disciplinary action, scheduling, team building, performance evaluation, etc.
  11. Assures that all pharmacy staff are appropriately trained to perform necessary functions.
  12. Ensures compliance with all applicable licensure and governing body requirements.
  13. Ensures compliance with purchasing agreement(s) and maintains close contact with vendor(s) for ordering, inventory and billing purposes.
  14. Ensures that all licensed pharmacy staff meet all licensure requirements including continuing education and recertification.
  15. Works with the appropriate Health Center personnel to develop and implement regular monitoring of quality indicators including but not limited to medication errors and client satisfaction.
  16. Works closely with the management personnel to maintain and develop all vendor contracts.
  17. To control drug expenditure by review of prescribing and provision of a managed system of entry for new drugs and to liaise with the management personnel on all aspects of Medicines Management.
  18. Formulates Pharmacy policies and procedures, interprets pharmacy administrative policies, directives and procedures to employees and patients.
  19. Other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Background and knowledge of pharmaceutics and their drugs and interactions.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail, supervisory, managerial and interpersonal skills.
  3. Familiarity and working ability with practice management systems, database operations, spreadsheets, and other software systems is a plus.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, and ages.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy;
  2. Current licensure to practice pharmacy in any state in the United States or U.S. territories.
  3. A minimum of five years of previous pharmacy experience, preferably with three years managerial and/or supervisory experience
