POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position involves duties that require specialized skills and an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices. The position requires application of judgment based on substantial experience in pharmaceutical procedures. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting the pharmacist(s) in ensuring the effective and efficient provision of patient care within the scope of the clinic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- The technician will have varying responsibilities, depending on applicable Tribal, Federal and State ordinances, rules, and regulations related to the preparation, review, dispensing, distribution, and control of drugs under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- The technician typically is responsible for & performs routine tasks to help prepare, fill and label prescribed medications of patients for pharmacist review. A partial but not all inclusive list of routine duties are:
- Daily screening of telephone calls from patients & physicians and provide needed telephone and administrative support for the department.
- Develop and maintain a service log on all telephone calls with complete follow-up history and periodic report(s) of service call trends for the department.
- Assist patients submitting written prescriptions and refill request.
- Assist physician’s offices transmitting prescriptions electronically.
- Correctly process prescriptions transmitted by physicians or prescriptions and refill requests submitted by patients.
- Establish and maintain patient medication profiles when entering prescriptions into the Registered Patient Management System (RPMS).
- Correctly identify and retrieve specified oral, topical and parenteral drug product(s) from inventories.
- Exact counting of tablets and capsules, exact measuring of volumes of liquids, exact weighing of topical ointments/creams and correct reconstitution of powders for oral suspension.
- Limited compounding of specified extemporaneous preparations from tablets or capsules, liquids or suspensions and topical ointments or cream.
- Prepare prescriptions label(s), select the appropriate type(s) of prescription container(s), and affix the prescription label(s) and specified auxiliary label(s) to the container(s).
- Identify “will call” prescriptions for patient pick up and “return to stock” medications not picked up by patient on a consistent and timely schedule.
- Assist patients picking up medications and document verification that patient receives correct prescription(s).
- The technician is also responsible for and performs routine tasks related to repackaging frequently prescribed pharmaceutical items into smaller units-of-use for pharmacist review with pertinent documentation.
- The technician extensively collaborates with clinic Business Office Manager and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to obtain reimbursement or refilling authority & adjust rejected claims for re-submission:
- Ongoing data entry, revision and deletion of pertinent drug product information (NDC, dispense unit, etc.) via RPMS necessary for obtaining PBM reimbursements.
- Troubleshooting third party prescription claims based on comprehension of pharmacy benefit plan parameters and reasons for on-line claim rejections.
- The Pharmacy Technician refers questions regarding review of prescriptions or drug therapy, drug information requests, health matters or complex pharmaceutical functions outside of the scope of their skills, certification, or training to the supervising pharmacist.
- This position is responsible for timely inventorying, ordering, receiving, marking and stocking of prescription and nonprescription medications, pharmacy reference materials, and other related department supplies through primary and secondary vendor(s) according to mandatory federal governmental contract provisions.
- The technician is accountable for monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliation and trend reporting related to primary and secondary vendor drug product acquisition expenditures and drug product utilizations.
- The technician is responsible for regularly scheduled calibration, maintenance and related quality control measures for medication counting machines and other department equipment such as computer printer, monitors, etc.
- This position is accountable for removing from inventory all outdated medication on an ongoing and consistent schedule.
- The technician is accountable for the monthly inventorying and stocking of the emergency cart and other department’s medications and removal of outdates.
- The Pharmacy Technician participates in designated ongoing quality improvement activities in the pharmacy department as required by the American Association of Ambulatory Health Centers (AAAHC), which includes participation in organized staff meetings and continuing education programs as conducted by pharmacy, medical, nursing or administrative managerial staffs.
- Responsible for RPMS Point of Sale (POS) billing private insurances, private individuals and/or Government entities for medications and medical/DME supplies.
- Understand and comply (POS) billing regulations/policies including but not limited to Medicare and Medicaid programs. Follow-up with payers, patients and other appropriate parties to collect open billings in a timely manner and to ensure compliance with billing regulations. Coordinate all patient information and process paperwork accurately including preparation of file for (POS) billing.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Responsibilities include (POS) billing, account follow-up and compliance with all governmental and regulatory agencies.

- Must be able to work in a diverse minority environment with individuals of various ages and educational backgrounds.
- Demonstrates appropriate communication skills, written and verbal, with patients, vendors, health care providers, and related staff in an outpatient Tribal clinic.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

- Must have a High School Diploma or a GED
- Must have an active National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) at time of interview.
- Must have a minimum of three (3) years of successful technician experience in a retail or Tribal Health Clinic.
