POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position provides direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care to individuals across the lifespan at the Fallon Tribal Health Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses and treatment for a specified patient population.
  2. Elicits detailed patient histories and preforms appropriate examinations.
  3. Reaches diagnoses and orders appropriate laboratory testing, imaging, specialty care.
  4. Prescribes appropriate inoculations and vaccines to immunize patients from communicable diseases.
  5. Make notes and chart observations in individual patient medical records and complete all additional documentation within 24 hours.
  6. Provides urgent medical care as needed or requested.
  7. Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
  8. Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
  9. Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.  Interprets appropriate diagnostic procedures and tests. Explain the necessity of preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patient and patient’s family.
  10. Evaluates and revises patient care/treatment plan with patient and family as necessary to achieve improved health.
  11. Provides education for patients and/or families about preventative care, medical issues and use of the prescribed medical treatment.
  12. Provides accurate documentation of patient care, document orders, directives, procedures and patient responses in the medical record and communicate them to other members of the health care team; maintain accurate, legible and confidential records,
  13. Work as a team member with medical/nursing staff to provide comprehensive care and promote continuity of care.
  14. Participates on clinic committees as requested.
  15. Attends meeting and in-service training of the medical staff or as specified by the Medical Director.
  16. Maintain professional knowledge, skills and refine expertise by attending continuing education programs; maintain certification in compliance with current state law; participate in professional affiliations.
  17. Participates in specified health promotion, education and/or prevention programs.
  18. Other job duties as assigned by the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Extensive knowledge and skills in assessing, evaluating and taking measures in different and sometimes difficult situations.
  2. Knowledge of a wide range of concepts, principles and practices, in the field of health care and Family Practice and the skill in applying this knowledge to difficult and complex work assignments.
  3. Must have the skills to diagnose and treat a variety of patients, including adults, geriatric and pediatric patients.
  4. Preferred knowledge of Indian Health Service (IHS) clinical/medical staff by-laws, rules and regulations.
  5. Fulfill mandated reporter requirements as defined by applicable law including immediately reporting any suspected cases of abuse and neglect to the appropriate authorities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. A current and valid medical license to practice medicine.
  2. Must be Board Certified or eligible.
  3. Must have completed an accredited residency program in Family Practice.
